Geladas, a 500-metre drop and a night at 3,600 metres. Our longest trip, and the one people book a year ahead.
The geladas
The Simien plateau holds the world's only population of gelada — grass-eating primates that live on the cliff edge and sleep on the rock face. Troops of two hundred are normal. They will graze within a few metres of you.
Day one
Debark to Sankaber, then along the escarpment towards Geech. The drop on your right is uninterrupted for most of the afternoon.
The night
We camp on the plateau. It is cold — around freezing — and the sky is worth staying up for.
Day two
The rim to the Jinbar waterfall, where the river simply leaves the cliff. Then the drive back to Gondar.
Fitness
This is our only expert-graded trip. Twenty-eight kilometres over two days at altitude, and you should have done a full day in the hills before booking.
