Eleven churches carved down into living rock, still in daily use after eight centuries.

The rock-hewn churches are grouped in two clusters either side of the Jordan River channel, connected by tunnels and trenches.

Heritage programmes here are led by local guides and often begin before dawn to catch the morning liturgy.
